day spa

berwick, 2003

Specialised day spa for RDC SPA, Berwick. The design uses simple construction techniques in an innovative and creative way, keeping costs down while providing the highly finished spaces expected in a luxury day spa.

A sculptural crevasse of glass in the ceiling produces dynamic shadows in the entry of this luxury spa. Concrete seats hover over a pool of river stones which is used to passively cool the building through evaporative cooling. Generous water harvesting meant that when Melbourne was hit by severe drought and water restrictions the spa could still run. Grey water treatment is also utilised to minimise water wastage. Indirect cove lighting creates a relaxing ambience.
