Crack Crab

Tokyo   2000

Luke’s winning design for emergency furniture was showcased in Tokyo at the Designers Block 2000. Responding to the need for emergency shelter and a supply kit in the aftermath of an earthquake in Tokyo, the design took its inspiration from aeronautics and combined it with the ingenuity he discovered within the park dwellers of Tokyo. The Cracked Crab comfortably exists as a compact chaise lounge with a difference. Nestled within are supplies required to survive post natural disaster, the lounge can be packed away and carried on you back. Once safety has been reached the Cracked crab is easily converted into a tent. When set up as a pagoda canopy collects and purifies rainwater. A whole family can fit comfortably inside, the supplies housed within enough to survive until disaster relief arrives. When set up as a pagoda canopy collects and purifies rainwater. Its monocoque form utilises the inherent durability of the double curve.
