Heritage Re-Invention, South Yarra
Winner Residential Design I Alterations & Additions I $200K-$500K
Heritage re-invention, and ‘ invention ‘ being the key descriptor here, was applied to the complete transformation of this elegant home into an exciting, modern, entertainer’s delight. The floorplan successfully achieves a simple and functional outcome, delivering way beyond the client’s understanding of what might be possible and defying the complexity of meeting the brief in harmony with the challenging constraints of the property. Constraints abound, demanding inspiration. The designer has skilfully identified and embraced these as exciting opportunities to think and plan vertically, to partner the client’s brief with the topography and cleverly interfacing multiple floor levels and building element massing without intrusion or dominating the neighbouring properties. This design respectfully retains the history and charm of the existing residence with its understated, cosy and welcoming ambience that opens up to reveal and connect the new extension as an exciting transition. Interest and delightful curiosity abound at every sneak-peek and at every level as each zone ascends effortlessly to the next, each with enticing interconnecting outdoor podium decks. Careful spacial interfacing and decor detailing integrated with the available light-filled outdoor spaces and interior zones of contrasting tones and timber finishes all combine to extend the length and breadth of the residence, boundary to boundary. This heritage re-invention is a remarkable achievement, harnessing the property’s potential and offering assurance that anything is possible with the right building designer. Without doubt, the winner in this category.
Anderson Residence, Great Ocean Road
Winner Residential Design I Alterations & Additions I Over $500K
The Anderson residence is awarded the maillot jaune (yellow jersey) among its competitors in this category. The result of a fully considered masterplan that encapsulates its surroundings, site context and topography, and transforms an exposed, tired and drab beach shack into an amazing re-imagined beautiful modern home, embracing the bush forest ascending Mount Sabine to the north-east and Bass Strait’s rugged ocean foreshore to the south-east. The design masterfully responds to the brief, offering multifunctional living and entertaining for multiple generations, including autonomy and privacy for holiday guests and a retreat from the busy Great Ocean Road traffic. Interior zones have been relocated and re-prioritised to capture the ocean views and breezes for cross-ventilation and climate control, combined with solar efficiency. Rainwater is harvested with abundant storage. Bushfire has been a major consideration in the design and selection of materials. Night and day, the interior offers a warm, snug, wintry retreat, and a cool breezy summer’s delight. Forestscapes and ocean-scapes are framed by strategically placed and proportionate windows. External intimate elevated decks embrace the sweeping ocean views. Cosy protected courtyards offer alternate retreats. A combination of carefully selected organic tones and colours, materials and textures co-exist with the greys and browns of the forest and volcanic rocky foreshore. These immediately give the residence a sense of place and ownership as it snuggles into its hillside. The Anderson residence is now the breakaway among its tight cluster of beachside neighbours and leads by a well-deserved margin as clear winner in this category.
